Washing River

Yin Xiuzhen

Chinese artist Yin Xiuzhen built a wall of ice on the Hobart waterfront, using frozen water from the River Derwent.

During Dark Mofo 2014, people were invited to take a mop or brush and ‘wash’ the wall with river water, symbolically cleansing the dirty water as the ice slowly melted and returned to the river.

Footage of the artwork’s installation, washing and melting was then screened at the Bond Store, TMAG.
