Growing Gagebrook Challenge

24 Carrot Garden

The Growing in Gagebrook project invited local families and residents to ‘dig for Victory’, submitting expressions of interest to receive a free home garden kits. The goal was to increase the number of local families growing their own food. In collaboration with Detached Cultural Organisation and Jordan River Services (Gagebrook and Bridgwater Community Centres) the project targeted residents living in Lower Gagebrook.

The home garden kits were in two-forms using either straw bale or no-dig methods, and included straw, bagged compost, veg-mix (soil), a selection of seasonal seeds and seedlings, a watering can, hose, hand tools and gardening gloves. Each kit also included an easy-to-read ‘growing guide’ detailing:

- Choosing the location
- Building the garden bed
- Planting and watering
- Sow-what-when guide
- Harvesting and recipes
- Pest management & problem solving
